A RELIC, A refuge, a story worth staying iN
The King of vintage mobile homes, born in the golden age of American manufacturing, Spartan Aircraft Company built planes during the war and trailers after it — applying the same precision engineering to life on the road. The Spartan Imperial Mansion wasn't just a trailer; it was a statement. Wide, weighty, and built with an almost architectural seriousness, it represented the peak of mid-century mobile luxury: solid aluminum construction, refined interiors, and a presence that turned heads at every campground it rolled into. For those who wanted to travel without giving anything up, the Spartan was the answer.
At Mackenzie Beach Resort, we've given this rare piece of history a home on the wild coast of Tofino. Carefully restored to honour its original character — those clean lines, substantial proportions, and unmistakable vintage gravitas — while refreshed for the comfort of today's traveller. The result is something you rarely find anywhere: a stay that feels genuinely one of a kind. Unhurried, considered, and steeped in a history that makes the ocean air feel even better.
The Spartan Story
Most trailers were built to travel. The Spartan was built to arrive.
Owned by J. Paul Getty — one of the richest men in America — the Spartan Aircraft Company spared no expense. After building planes through World War II, Getty's team pivoted to trailers in 1945, aiming squarely at buyers who wanted something closer to a mobile luxury apartment than a box on wheels. They brought everything they knew from aviation with them: a semi-monocoque construction technique never before seen in trailer manufacturing, compound curves in the aluminum skin, and interiors finished with gleaming birch paneling and art deco styling.
They were widely acknowledged to be the best-built and most lavishly equipped trailers on the market— and priced to match. At a time when a new family home cost around $8,000, a Spartan ran close to $4,000. They weren't for everyone. They were for people who refused to compromise.
Production ended in 1962. The vintage Spartans that remain are still showpieces today — so well made that even a neglected example can be a solid candidate for restoration.
Ours is one of them. Sitting at the edge of the Pacific, it's a reminder that luxury and adventure were never opposites — just waiting to meet in the right place.
